Atlantans revive hospital
Saeed Ahmed - Staff
Thursday, October 5, 2000
A Rwandan medical facility, ransacked and destroyed at the height of the 1994 genocide, is getting a
new lease on life, thanks to the efforts of an Atlanta couple. Jolio and Sylvia Barbosa, moved by the
accounts of a friend, launched a drive seven months ago to help reopen Mugonero Hospital in Rwanda's
Kibuye province. Since then, the Barbosas have collected enough materials to fill two 40-foot-long shipping containers
--- from hospital beds donated by the Dekalb Medical Center, to 400 pounds of nails their children
rounded up from neighbors.
The couple will savor the fruits of their labor Wednesday when officials
from the Department of Defense help transport the supplies to Rwanda. The sea-bound containers will
reach Kibuye in November.
"It just goes to show that people are good and generous, and for them to pour out their heart, all I had
to do was ask," Sylvia Barbosa said of the response by Atlanta residents to the drive. "I guess, when you
believe in something, you can make a huge difference."
