Anti-violence rallies planned by Arabs, Jews
Saeed Ahmed - Staff
Thursday, October 12, 2000

Members of Atlanta's Jewish and Palestinian communities are taking part in separate rallies this week to denounce the violence in the West Bank and encourage Arab and Israeli leaders to return to the negotiating table to hammer out a peace agreement.

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the "Rally of Solidarity" sponsored today by the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta. The event will include a call for peace by community leaders and a prayer for Israel.

"We're in the midst of our High Holy Days, and it's a time of peace and serenity within the Jewish community," said Margo Dix, community relations director for the Jewish federation. "With the rally, we want to express our solidarity with the Israeli people and to hope for a renewed focus on working toward achieving a peaceful resolution."

On Saturday, Atlanta-area Palestinians will hold an afternoon demonstration in front of the CNN Center to denounce the Israeli army's crackdown on Arab protesters and to call for balanced coverage in the media of the Mideast situation.

"What is always left out of news accounts is the context of the current violence," contended Rani el-Hajjar, a graduate engineering student at Georgia Tech and a Palestinian Christian. "The Palestinian people can hardly be expected to accept the status quo through years of mounting frustration over the denial of their basic human and national rights."

The Israeli support rally starts at 5:30 p.m. today at Ahavath Achim Congregation, 600 Peachtree Battle Ave., Atlanta.

The Palestinian rally starts at 1 p.m. Saturday.
