Mideast deaths sadden area's Palestinians
Saeed Ahmed - Staff
Thursday, December 28, 2000
For Atlanta area Palestinians, the holiday season this year was one of solemn remembrance.
The
ongoing violence in the Middle East, which has claimed 350 lives --- almost all of them Palestinians,
meant the cancellation of Eid and Christmas observances in their homeland and subdued celebration
among the residents here.
After Eid al Fitr prayers Wednesday, some Palestinian Muslims met for a luncheon in Buckhead to
talk about the violence and its toll on friends and relatives. Most expressed little hope of a peaceful
resolution.
Earlier, about 35 Palestinianian supporters gathered in front of Christ the King Catholic Church on Peachtree Road
for a candlelight vigil on Christmas Eve. "The vigil was a silent prayer to tell the world that the
Palestinians who are dying are not just Muslims but also Christians," said Jalal Yaqoub, member of the
American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, which organized the vigil.
